Li Yuanchao And His Elevator Incident PDF Print E-mail
Real China

Two of the main players in the attempted coup by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leaders Bo Xilai and Zhou Yongkang, have been arrested, while episodes of assassinations and strange accidents among the Communist Party leaders are just coming to light, one by one.

Li Yuanchao, the Vice President of the People's Republic of China, and also a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, who replaced Zhou Yongkang (now arrested) has put himself in charge of many areas, during this special period of leadership struggle.

Li Yuanchao himself also experienced an incident known as the “elevator hick-up”.

At the end of November 2011, Li went to Shanghai for an an investigation. He went to the Shanghai Henshan Hotel, the specified hotel of the Shanghai municipal government for holding official receptions and functions, to listen to the Shanghai municipal government’s report.

Li went into an elevator and the elevator started upwards.  All of a sudden, the power was cut off and the elevator was stuck between floor 3 and 4. According to a witness, 20 minutes later, the elevator suddenly started up, dashed to the 4th floor and stopped there.

After the door of the elevator opened, bodyguards and other officials noticed Li had almost collapsed with both hands resting on the wall of the elevator; his face sweating and as pale as a sheet of paper. His four bodyguards and security agents immediately helped him on a stretcher and carried him to an ambulance. Then the security guards rapidly fled. The two previous bodyguards who were supposed to accompany Li into the elevator were taken away by four soldiers. The elevator was later subjected to a thorough inspection.

According to the regulations, when a leader goes into an elevator, his or her bodyguard should go with him or her. However, on this occasion his bodyguards did not do so.

It has been said that Li Yuanchao is well known as a member of “the youth league faction” and a 'princeling', a privileged relative of CCP leaders, and was on very good terms with the former Chinese leader, Hu Jintao. He controlled the Department of Administration of the CCP for Hu, who encouraged members of the youth league faction to take up important provincial ministerial positions in the 18th Congress.

According to a foreign media report, Li Peng, who supported Deng Xiaoping in launching the June 4th massacre, was always afraid that Li Yuanchao would promote the rehabilitation of June 4th once he came to be a politburo member. So Li Peng repeatedly complained about him, saying that, his aim was to completely change the structural nature of the CCP and to undermine the leadership of the CCP. Li Peng frequently mentioned the democracy issue of the CCP in senior leaders meetings. Li Yuanchao sympathized with the students’ activity and those students who fought for democracy and freedom on June 4th and he protected some of them during the purge after the massacre.
